Billion-level industrial chain! China’s new energy consumption capacity improves, and compressed air energy storage projects grow strongly.

CCTV News:On April 30, the world’s largest compressed air energy storage project was connected to the grid in Shandong, which is a milestone in the application of new energy storage technology in China and will improve the absorption capacity of new energy in China. How does this compressed air energy storage project work?

The demonstration project started construction in February 2023, and will enter the trial operation stage after grid-connected power generation. When power consumption is low, air at normal temperature and pressure is compressed and stored, and power generation at peak power consumption is like a super "charging treasure".

A major feature of the demonstration project is to use local salt cave resources to store compressed air in nearby underground salt caves, which can be used at any time.

When the project generates electricity, compressed air will enter the core power generation equipment such as turbo-expander from the salt cave through the gas pipeline.

Underground salt caves are transformed into artificial chambers for gas storage resources to expand new space.

The compressed air energy storage project in Feicheng, Shandong Province uses local salt cave resources to store gas. According to statistics, China’s underground salt mine reserves exceed one trillion tons, and there are abundant salt cave resources. How to make good use of these resources, and what new technologies will be used for compressed air energy storage?

Salt cave is a cave in the underground salt layer, which is formed by controlling the dissolution of rock salt by water injection. According to technical conditions, the volume can reach hundreds of thousands of cubic meters, and according to different depths, a large amount of gas can be stored at a pressure of up to 20 MPa. Salt cave resources in China are mainly distributed in Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei, Shaanxi and other places.

In addition to salt caves, in order to expand underground gas storage resources, pilot demonstration projects of new energy storage with artificial chambers as gas storage are under construction in Jiuquan, Gansu, Zhongning, Ningxia, Xinyang, Henan and other places. The biggest feature of the project is to build gas storage by manual excavation.

Experts said that the utilization of domestic idle salt cave resources and the popularization of artificial cavern technology will accelerate the landing of compressed air energy storage projects.

The strong growth of compressed air energy storage projects will drive the 100 billion industrial chain.

Domestic compressed air energy storage projects show a strong growth momentum. What is its global development and what upstream and downstream industries will it drive?

In Yingcheng, Hubei Province, the total investment of a 300 MW compressed air energy storage project reached 1.95 billion yuan, which drove the upstream and downstream industrial chains close to those of thermal power, power equipment, underground engineering and other industries, and the core equipment was basically localized.

Compressed air energy storage technology has developed rapidly in the world, and technologies such as liquid air energy storage, constant pressure compressed air energy storage and isothermal compressed air energy storage have been demonstrated and applied. Britain, the United States, Canada and other countries have built new compressed air energy storage power stations, and Australia, Switzerland, Spain, Chile and other countries are also promoting industrialization.

Experts said that compressed air energy storage is still in the early stage of industrialization, with a long industrial chain and wide coverage, and it is expected that the scale of upstream and downstream industries will reach 100 billion in the future.
